Original Painting for Bird Week Exhibition — 20% of the sale of this artwork goes to BirdLife Australia.

This artwork is part of the Bird Week Exhibition, an annual art exhibition supporting BirdLife Australia. The theme this year ‘From the Ground Up’ explores the crucial connection between birds and trees.

Glossy Black Cockatoo’s highly specialized diet of almost exclusively the seeds of she-oak trees has left them vulnerable to the actions we humans take. The story of she-oaks and Glossy Black Cockatoos is a long tale, both having evolutionarily developed for the other, with specialized beaks on the cockatoos and the tree evading predation. She-oaks are unusual trees, separated into male and female (dioecious), with the female trees producing the cones that contain seeds. Their fates are intertwined, with both the Glossy Black Cockatoo and the She-oaks it feeds from both listed as endangered.

This artwork celebrates this unique and special relationship and features a female Glossy Black Cockatoo (right) and fledgling (left). A hopeful inclusion, the fledgling represents the future. We were lucky enough to see this dynamic pair on the beach (along with a male) in northern NSW this past April, lifting our hearts.
