Have you ever heard of lerp? Produced by the larvae of psyllid insects, lerp is sweet - crystallized honeydew that’s rich in energy, composed of starch, protein and fat. While it may sound great, psyllids are sap sucking insects that take nutrients from trees and plants, damaging them. Also known as ‘plant lice’ this sweet treat for birds and other creatures happens to be a Spotted Pardalotes favourite food. By eating lerp and psyllids, Spotted Pardalotes help to keep the trees around them healthy and thriving. When I was creating this painting, I was struck by the spots of the Spotted Pardalote resembling the spots of their main food source lerp (the white spots on the leaves in the painting).
